Five people were successfully rescued from the debris of a four-storey building that collapsed in Cairo's upscale district of Heliopolis Tuesday, with no fatalities have been reported so far, according to the Ministry of Health and Population.

According to the ministry, three of the rescued individuals were treated at the scene, while two others were transferred to the hospital and are currently receiving medical care.

Meanwhile, Governor of Cairo Ibrahim Saber revealed that the collapse was caused by internal modifications made in one of the building’s apartments.

The modifications compromised the building's structural integrity, leading to its catastrophic failure, he explained.

Saber emphasised that the search and rescue efforts are ongoing to locate any additional survivors trapped under the rubble, with loudspeakers being used to communicate with anyone who might be alive.

Following the building's collapse, security forces cordoned off the area until removing the debris and finalising rescue operations, with civil protection teams searching for survivors under the rubbles.

The accident is the latest in a series of building disasters in Egypt over recent years that have injured and killed residents.

These accidents are often due to old or compromised structures.
