Georgia election: Democrats on course for Senate control

The Democratic Party of US President-elect Joe Biden is on the verge of taking control of the Senate as results come in from two elections in Georgia. Raphael Warnock is a confirmed winner and, if Jon Ossoff joins him, it will give Mr Biden full control of Congress to push forward his legislative agenda. Separately, US lawmakers are meeting to confirm Mr Biden's election victory. Donald Trump told supporters near the White House to oppose the result and they have now marched to the Capitol. Inside, a joint session of Congress is counting and confirming electoral college votes. Some Republicans have lodged a bid to overturn the results in a number of states and, although the attempt is almost certain to fail, both houses of Congress may have to spend hours debating their objections. However, the top Republican in the Senate, Mitch McConnell, has already blasted the attempt to block the result, saying if it succeeded "our democracy would enter a death spiral". Nearby, close to the White House in Washington, supporters of President Trump held a "Save America Rally". Mr Trump told the crowds he would "never concede" the 3 November election and urged supporters to march to the legislature, where they breached police barriers. He has repeatedly alleged electoral fraud without providing evidence. He blasted Republicans who planned to vote to certify Mr Biden's victory as "weak".
