A boat carrying at least 45 refugees capsized off Yemen’s Taiz coast on Wednesday night, resulting in the death of 41 individuals. The UN refugee agency in Yemen confirmed the incident on Thursday, citing strong winds and overloading as the primary causes of the disaster. According to the agency, only four survivors have been recovered from the ordeal.

The UN refugee agency is actively collaborating with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to provide necessary assistance and protection to the survivors. Despite the ongoing efforts, no additional details regarding the fate of the remaining refugees have been released.

This incident is part of a troubling trend in the region. In June, another catastrophic event occurred when a vessel carrying 260 migrants from Somalia capsized off the Yemeni coast, resulting in at least 49 deaths and 140 people missing. Since 2014, the IOM has documented 1,860 deaths and disappearances along the perilous migration route from East Africa and the Horn of Africa to Gulf countries.
